ABOUT ME

Greetings! Caitlyn here.

That's me there, setting up a ring light.

I'm a Year Two student pursuing my diploma in Communication Design, where I have learnt that creativity can go beyond pure aestheticism and there is a lot of thought put into producing a piece of work - technical considerations and utilising subtle ways to represent what one might want to convey.

In my CCA, Music Vox, I have embarked on projects focusing on promoting the activities of the members, many of which include video production since we are not able to conduct live performances due to the pandemic. However, not really having had prior experience with filming and lighting, I wanted to challenge myself to improve the quality of the videos we produce to accompany how we showcase our members' musical talent.

ABOUT MY PROJECT

My project aims to aid the video production of the YouTube Streaming Premiere, broadcasting music videos made from the songs accompanying TP Music Vox’s long-playing record (LP), which will then be further enhanced with the aid of digital media effects.

In doing so, I would be embarking on a self-researched learning process to produce videos as needed with filming and video editing techniques that can include, but are not limited to, coloured 2D animation and visual effects (VFX) on music videos. I aim to produce 2 videos for this premiere (heading the creative direction and/or execution) with relevant help from industry experts.

MY GOALS

Familiarise myself with a physical camera

  • Learning the videography settings and properly toggle camera settings, such as ISO (camera sensitivity to light) and Camera Exposure (light per unit area reaching the camera sensor) according to lighting in the location I want to film in;

  • Learn how to overcome filming difficulties both indoors and outdoors (due to sunlight changing with time, as well as wall colour affecting the video) to create a cohesive video regardless of location;

  • Using colour in the production and post-production process (coloured lighting, colour grading etc.) to further portray a mood/setting in video production;

  • Creating/collaborating on a fully animated coloured video that incorporates smoother keyframing (time-based moving pictures) and frame-by-frame animation (drawing 3 frames per second of the video);

  • Enhancing videos with special video effects and transitions, such as video overlays, masking and keeping a person in the same place while changing the surroundings;

  • Pick up tips and ideation tricks from industry experts who have experience in videography for music videos.

ALONG THE WAY...

I attended a SkillShare lesson on the Basics of Hand-Drawn Animation by Johannes Fast, who covered the basic set-up of a working file and the principles of animation and the theory of different motions.

Being involved with the editing of Music Vox's Soundscape Sundays series, I took the chance to try out new editing techniques and animations to further expand my knowledge and usage of After Effects.
